Record subgroup for the ALPLM Manuscripts Department for collections and vertical files. Small collections include personal and family papers, corporate records, county records, and military records. Vertical files include small collections of unknown or varied provenance used predominantly as ready reference files, documenting Illinois counties and cities, individuals, businesses, organizations, and events.

Scope and Contents 2 carbon typescripts of articles by Henry Clay Whitney: "History of the First 'Anti-Nebraska' Convention in Illinois" and slight variant of "Abraham Lincoln's Great Speech at Bloomington," a reconstruction of the speech published in McClures (September 1896).

Collection — Box 4
Scope and Contents Consists of two letters written by Jacob and Silas Baldwin to relatives in Vermont. They had recently moved to Bureau County, Illinois, and farmed in Fairfield Township. The letters discuss farming conditions, land, and prices. Silas Baldwin also mentions politics and Kansas and the slavery question.

Scope and Contents Handwritten manuscript of speech given in Jacksonville, vehemently opposing the Nebraska Bill. Includes several news clippings regarding the bill and various states and cities opposition to it. One pamphlet from the committee appointed by the trustees of the Illinois Conference Female Seminary regarding payment from those who owe the the school money. Mather was the treasurer of the committee.

Scope and Contents Upon request from Simeon Whiteley he writes his recollections, 8 pages, of the Editorial Convention held in Decatur, Illinois and comprised of about 18 editors in the state who were opposed to the Kansas-Nebraska Bill. Gives list of those who attended and the topics they discussed including the formation of the Republican Party and their support for Mr. Lincoln as U.S. Senator.
