Record subgroup for the ALPLM Manuscripts Department for collections and vertical files. Small collections include personal and family papers, corporate records, county records, and military records. Vertical files include small collections of unknown or varied provenance used predominantly as ready reference files, documenting Illinois counties and cities, individuals, businesses, organizations, and events.

Scope and Contents Consists of a letter by John Armstrong of Springfield, Illinois written to William Marsh, U.S. Consulate, Altona (Prussia), May 7, 1865. He informs Marsh of the death of Abraham Lincoln, gives details of funeral preparation in Springfield, and discusses business affairs and construction in the city.

Collection — Box 57
Scope and Contents Letter of admittance, letters to family and grade reports from Annapolis. He tells of his life, studies and difficulties at the Naval Academy. Three letters from Owen Lovejoy regarding his efforts toward reinstatement and two letters from the Academy. Letters from the war mainly discuss camp life and activities. Mentions General Curtis several times and gives his opinion of him. Is fighting only for preservation of the union and states he hates "abolitionists as much as he hates the secesh"....
