Record subgroup for the ALPLM Manuscripts Department for collections and vertical files. Small collections include personal and family papers, corporate records, county records, and military records. Vertical files include small collections of unknown or varied provenance used predominantly as ready reference files, documenting Illinois counties and cities, individuals, businesses, organizations, and events.

Collection — Box 64
Scope and Contents Diary kept at the age of 84 gives a daily account of his activities, people he interacts with and the weather. Also writes about the past and mentions articles or books he has written. Several speeches and reminiscences he wrote re: a Lincoln-Douglas debate, a trip from eastern Illinois and cheese making.

Scope and Contents Letters to family in both Illinois and Massachusetts from Canton and LaHarpe, Illinois. Discusses the family, the crops, the houses, the natural vegetation, and the differences between the way things are done in Illinois and in Massachusetts such as cooking and the differences between people from different states.

Scope and Contents Genealogical notes on the Short family. A remembrance of her early life in Bristol. Recounts their life on the farm, building their house, the prairie, their move into Chicago and subsequent cholera epidemic that made her father return to the country, the schools, and their neighbors.
