Record subgroup for the ALPLM Manuscripts Department for collections and vertical files. Small collections include personal and family papers, corporate records, county records, and military records. Vertical files include small collections of unknown or varied provenance used predominantly as ready reference files, documenting Illinois counties and cities, individuals, businesses, organizations, and events.

Collection — Box 65
Scope and Contents Letter, sent from Circleville, Ill., to Thabius Bancroft in Grafton, Vermont from where he had just returned from a visit. Describes his trip back and the quality of land along the way. Describes the fertility of his land in Illinois and its superiority to Vermont. Mentions problems with the British Fur Company in Oregon Territory and the Russians in the west. Also discusses talking with [Thomas J.] Farnham re: his expedition to California.

Scope and Contents Journal describes experiences along the way. Vividly describes several bouts of seasickness among the passengers during rough waters, the passengers and their different nationalities, several tales of drunkenness among various passengers and workers and the boat trying to pass through thick ice near Mackinack and being forced to remain there due to ice.
