Record subgroup for the ALPLM Manuscripts Department for collections and vertical files. Small collections include personal and family papers, corporate records, county records, and military records. Vertical files include small collections of unknown or varied provenance used predominantly as ready reference files, documenting Illinois counties and cities, individuals, businesses, organizations, and events.

Scope and Contents Land grant in Illinois for Abraham C. Van who served in War of 1812 in Butterfield's Company of the 2nd Infantry. Land grant in Illinois to Henry Sheffer for service in the War of 1812 in Reed's Corp of artillery. Both signed by James Monroe.

Scope and Contents Letter, 1814, from his brother Amos in Sag Harbor, New York to John in Pennsylvania, mentions the defeat of Napoleon, describes a ship battle seen from their home the night before and describes the "new constructed invulnerable boat" he has seen sailing in the waters near his home. Letter, 1836, from John to his sons Amos and Owen in Shelbyville, Ill., informing them of the death of their sister, Harriet, and asking them to come to him in his sorrow.

Tells of his long journey from Virginia to New Orleans to meet with his regiment in time to fight in the Battle of New Orleans.
