Scope and Contents

The Henry Bascom Rankin Papers, 1889-1927, consist of 2.5 linear feet, 2 archival boxes and 1 oversize bound volume of correspondence, clippings, programs, book manuscripts and proofs related to Rankin's interest in and authority on Abraham Lincoln.

Ten bound volumes of indexed correspondence, clippings, photographs and programs; three bound volumes of manuscript revisions and two proof copies (one an oversize bound volume) of Rankin's books; clippings and review notices of Rankin's books; volume of clippings related to marking historic Lincoln sites in Springfield, Illinois; index and inventory of Rankin's library. Correspondence concerns, Rankin's publications, and his authority on Abraham Lincoln. Correspondents include publishers and Lincoln authors such as Lord Charnwood, Ida M. Tarbell and Joseph Fort Newton.

Lincoln author, farmer, investor and banker, Henry Bascom Rankin, was the son of Amberry and Arminda Rogers Rankin. He studied law in the office of Abraham Lincoln and William Herndon, Springfield, Illinois, from 1856 to 1861, and came to know Abraham Lincoln. Born in Athens, Illinois, Rankin lived in Petersburg, Jacksonville, and Springfield, Illinois. He married Alma Hurd in 1864, and they were the parents of Fred H., Albert H. and Emma (Mrs. Clayton J. Barber) Rankin. Henry Rankin wrote Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln, 1916, and Intimate Character Sketches of Abraham Lincoln, 1924, as well as several pamphlets and articles on Lincoln. Alma Rankin died in 1915, and Henry in 1927 at the age of 91. They are buried in Indian Point Cemetery, Athens, Illinois.
