Afro-American Studies and Research Program records

Identifier: MS-BC9

Program begun in 1969 at the University of Illinois in Champaign, not as a specific department or a major but with twenty five classes offered in various programs, then received a grant in 1981, under the leadership of Dr. Gerald McWhorter, to develop a core curriculum. Although the program had been in existence for ten years when McWhorter took over as director, very few students were taking it as a minor and budgetary cuts had prevented it from growing. Under McWhorter, a curriculum grant was received which allowed four Afro-American classes to be developed and six research grants to be funded. McWhorter also founded the Illinois Council for Black Studies in 1979 and made the U of I a member of the National Council for Black Studies that same year. In 1982 the National Council for Black Studies held its annual convention at the University of Illinois. He started the Afro-Scholar Newsletter in 1980, for news of happenings in the area of Black Studies, which became an international news letter in 1983. McWhorter had received his PH.D in Sociology from the University of Chicago and prior to coming to the U of I, had been the Director of Afro-American Studies at Fisk University and Acting Director for the Center for Black Studies, University of California at Santa Barbara.
