Overview

Families related by the marriages of two sisters, Addie Ross Alkire and Mary E. Ross Leach. Their widowed mother, Mary Houston Ross, brought her family from Ohio to Illinois in 1858. Addie Ross married James Y. Alkire, a farmer and physician of Sherman, Illinois, and Mary E. Ross married Adoniram Judson Leach, a farmer and teacher of Elkhart, Illinois. Addie and James had six daughters and Mary and Adoniram had two sons.

Family correspondence, primarily between Addie Ross Alkire, her sister Mary E. Leach, and her husband James Alkire. Letters received by Addie from James Alkire prior to their marriage and correspondence among other family members is also included. The correspondence mostly concerns daily activities of farm life. Several family members traveled or settled in the west, in Nevada, the Dakota Territory and California and letters discuss their experiences. The collection also contains material concerning the Neer, Houston and Shamel families. Some genealogical material and poetry by Priscilla E. Neer is also included.
