Scope and Contents
Signed letter, March 1845, to W.L.D. Ewing, auditor of the state, telling him he will do what he can for Campbell, asking for more scrip and praising the actions of the legislature. This was written below a note to Ewing from Samuel Reed ordering scrip. Signed letter, Aug. 1845, to A.B. Sherriff in Millersburg regarding legal matters, property. Signed document, Feb. 1854, certifying Samuel H. Treat to have been Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court when he signed a document (attached) regarding a deed of William S. and Adeline Crane. Letter, March 1854, to N.W. Edwards informing him of his appointment to State Superintendent of Schools.

Came to Illinois at the age of 25 from New York, dabbled in real estate, was a contractor on the Illinois Michigan Canal, owned a woolen mill, a store and founded the first bank in Joliet, Ill., was elected to the state senate from that city and elected governor in 1852.
