July 24, 1879 letter to General John A. McClernand regarding his service in the Black Hawk War and his remembrance of the wilderness of the prairie when he first traveled through it. Sent in response to a request for information re: men who had served in that war.

Biographical / Historical
Lyman Meacham served in the Black Hawk War from Michigan Territory under command of General Brown. Came to Illinois with two brothers and their families in 1832 passing through Chicago and settling at Meacham's Grove.
