Scope and Contents
An account of each trip to retrieve the body of each of his sons. He travelled by boat, the first trip on rivers and the second by ocean, most of the way and mentions the boats they pass, the cities where they stop, the countryside, farms and plantations, the effects of war on all of these, problems along the way, weather, what he eats, a shooting at one hotel, the return trip and the burial of his sons.

Biographical / Historical
Resident of New York who lost two of his sons in the Civil War. George W. had lived in Illinois and mustered in at Chicago and died near Vicksburg. John P. Tyler served in the 12th New York Cavalry and died in North Carolina.
