Four page letter to Peter D. Vroom, Oct. 26, 1858, discusses local politics including Richard Oglesby and Stephen A. Douglas; James Buchanan and patronage; and Emperor Alexander of Russia and his "benevolent design" and acquiring a picture of Nicholas in his sleigh. Three page letter to Vroom, Dec. 16, 1865, discusses President Johnson and Governor Oglesby.

Biographical / Historical

Physician in Bloomington, Illinois, originally from Pennsylvania, who in 1858 had just returned to Bloomington after serving as surgeon in the Russian army during the Crimean War and then traveling throughout Europe. He continued his practice in Bloomington until his death.
