Letters to Chandler Johnson in Vermont discuss the family news, his children, the death of his wife, the farm and the town. Gives account of his crops, the orchards, the yield and selling prices. How many cheeses they have made and the selling price. Always tells how and what his children are doing. Discusses the growth of Woodville and the railroads being built in Illinois.

Biographical / Historical

Born in Rutland County, Vermont around 1800. Came with his wife Susan and their children from Vermont (as well as his children from a previous marriage) and settled in Woodville, Adams County, Illinois where he farmed. Susan died in 1849 and in 1850 he bought the tavern in Woodville, trading part of his farmland. He later moved to California to work in mining, and he died in Placerville, California in 1879.
