Overview

Farmer from Yellowhead Township, Kankakee County, IL who served in Company H, 76th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. He was born in Canada. He came to Illinois and in 1849 he and Sophronia Joyner were married. They had two sons, Azel and Frank. He joined the Infantry in 1862 and was made 3rd Sergeant, Company H, of the 76th Regiment in August of 1862. His regiment served in Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana. They spent much time around Vicksburg. At the end of the war, Albert who had had a chronic problem with diarrhea, had been in a hospital and then a convalescent camp in Barrancas, Florida. He was recommended for commission as a 2nd Lieutenant, but was discharged as a sergeant in June 1865. He returned home to Yellowhead, where he continued to farm until his death in 1876. Sophronia eventually sold the farm and moved to Kansas.

Correspondence, discharge papers, legal papers, memoranda book and typescripts of all material. Correspondence includes that of Albert and Sophronia during the war, their son Azel while living in Indiana, Albert’s sister, Mahala Giles and others. Albert’s letters discuss day to day life while encamped in Tennessee, around Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Louisiana, news he has heard of the war, the skirmishes and battles of his regiment and those wounded or killed, his own health and advice to Sophronia on running the farm. He frequently addresses words to his sons. A copy of the recommendation for Lieutenant and the discharge papers for Albert. Legal papers include deeds and pension information. Memoranda book gives lists of expenses and recruits. There is a list of all of Albert’s possessions at the time of his death.
