Scope and Contents

Consists of correspondence between Edgar Lee Masters and his son, Hardin (1918-1947, undated), and other correspondence ranging from personal correspondence to other family members, correspondence between family members not involving Edgar Lee Masters, professional correspondence regarding Masters' attempt at becoming a circuit judge, professional correspondence dealing with the research for a book Masters was writing, and correspondence involving the museum at Masters' childhood home (1824-1988). The collection consists of personal papers such as family history and genealogy papers, a marriage book, a funeral tribute, a high school diploma, Christmas cards, and a school attendance record (1847-1973). Lastly, the collection holds literary works and publications written by Edgar Lee Masters (1914-19443), reviews and research of Masters and his publications (1923-1937, undated), scrapbooks, book summaries, and plays written to honor Masters (1941-2016)

Arrangement Note

The Edgar Lee Masters Collection is arranged in three series: Series 1, Correspondence, 1834-1938; Series 2, Personal Papers, 1847-1973; and Series  3, Publications, Literary Work, and Research, 1904-1970. Series 1 includes personal and professional correspondence, and is arranged chronologically. Series 2 contains a marriage book, material from family funerals, genealogy information, Master's High School Diploma, papers concerning a clock this is a Masters' family heirloom, papers on the ceremony for Masters' Stamp, and a scrapbook of newspaper clippings. Series 2 is also arranged in chronological order. Series 3 holds poems, manuscripts of Edgar Lee's books, book reviews, notebooks, scrapbooks, a receipt, news articles, copies of Reedy's Mirror, and promotional material for Masters. Series 3 is sorted chronologically.

Separated Materials

Photographs, a reel, and a tape transferred to the Audio-Visual Department, and several books transferred to the Published Materials Department.
