Scope and Contents

Handwritten manuscript of Cadwallader’s book includes notes, changes and the chapters that were deleted in the published work.  The manuscript covers the war including the Vicksburg and Chattanooga campaigns, the actions of Army of the Potomac, the meeting of Grant and Lincoln at City Point, Grant and Sherman planning strategy and Grant and Lee at Appomattox.  It often gives Grant’s opinions as well as Cadwallader’s of other generals, including Sherman, Sheridan and McClernand.  It includes discussions of many others including T. Lyle Dickey, Lew Wallace, Halleck, Rawlins, Butler, Pope, Meade and others.  It also includes the chapters with interviews with Jefferson Davis and Wirz, their trials, the trial and execution of the Lincoln conspirators, Johnson’s tour of the states, his impeachment, Stanton’s post war activities, Grant’s growing political aspirations and the death of Rawlins.  Also includes letters re: a critique of the manuscript and possible publication.  Contents at beginning give summary of content of each chapter.
