Andrew H. Hershey was born on January 3, 1840 in Marietta, Pennsylvania to Dr. Andrew Hershey, a physician, and Fannie Nase. Dr. Hershey died in 1839 at the age of thirty-seven. Fannie remarried, this time to Mr. William Macken, and she, William, and Andrew moved to Savanna, Illinois. Hershey attended Mt. After his discharge from the military, Hershey returned to Savanna and in 1873 was appointed deputy collector for the United States Department of Internal Revenue in the third district of Illinois. Hershey held this position until 1885, at which point Hershey moved to Sterling, Illinois. The next year, Hershey was elected county treasurer. From 1891 until 1892, Hershey served as mayor of Sterling. Hershey married Hattie E. Bowen on March 25, 1868. They had three children: Fannie, Marie, and Benjamin.
