Scope and Contents

Papers of Pascal Enos, Sr. and Pascal Enos, Jr. and family. Includes correspondence, legal documents, bank book and ledger. Approximately 180 documents concerning his work in Vermont, twenty dated during his time in St. Louis but mostly dealing with his affairs back in Vermont. There is a ledger from his livery and blacksmithing business in St. Louis. The letter from Senator Thomas regarding a Sangamon land office is dated December 4, 1820. The majority of the collection deals with his time in that office including his correspondence to the Secretary of Treasury, concerning the charges against him and Cox and a retraction of charges by Hamilton. There is also correspondence concerning national politics, the selection of judges, the Winnebago War and the Black Hawk War. There are also letters regarding the business of the general store. Pascal Enos, Jr.’s correspondence includes topics such as the Alton and Springfield Railroad and the Northern Cross Railroad, David Davis writing about a new legislation for making, altering and changing the judicial circuit and the slavery issue. A bank book from 1860-1865 at N.H. Ridgely & Co. The collection includes letters from Ninian Edwards, George Forquer, Jesse B. Thomas, Sidney Breese, Daniel P. Cook, David Davis, and John McLean.

Abstract

Papers of Pascal Enos, one of the founders of Springfield, Illinois and appointed receiver of the land officer there in 1832 by President Monroe and his son Pascal Enos, Jr., who was elected to the Illinois legislature in 1852 and appointed Clerk of the United States Circuit Court by Justice McClean of the Supreme Court and re-appointed by Justice David Davis.
