Scope and Contents

Collection consists of the diary of David Judson Chaffee for the year 1861. A student at Western Homeopathic College (Cleveland, OH) Chaffee noted his coursework, lectures, social occasions, and Abraham Lincoln’s speech in Cleveland (February 15, 1861). He later returned home to Palermo, NY, and the entries reflect social life in that community. Inserted printed material include a listing of college faculty and a newspaper report on Lincoln at Columbus, OH. Other loose items include two prescriptions and the autograph of Jehu Brainerd, a Western Homeopathic College faculty member.

David Judson Chaffee (1835-1923) was born in Palermo, NY and attended Western Homeopathic College in Cleveland, OH. After graduating in 1863 he returned to Palermo where he married Louisa Broadwell and practiced medicine.
