Scope and Contents

The Bohrer-Fifer Family Papers, 1863-1965 consist of correspondence, clippings, printed material, and personal papers of the  family of Florence Fifer-Bohrer.  The collection includes papers of Bohrer, her father Governor Joseph W. Fifer, and her daughter Gertrude Bohrer Hooten, as well as other family members.

Arrangement Note

The collection is arranged into five series: Series 1. Florence Fifer Bohrer Papers, 1895-1965; Series 2. Joseph W. Fifer Papers, 1863-1939; Series 3. Gertrude Bohrer Hooten Papers, 1915-1945; Series 4. Other Family Members Papers, 1867-1959; Series 5. Miscellaneous Correspondence and Papers, 1861-1936. Series 1 (Boxes 1 ad 2) includes personal correspondence, a bound volume of her memoirs and some personal records. Also in this series is political material from her campaign for state senate in the 1920s, as well as other politically related correspondence and invitations. A paper written by Richard Dunn in 1965, "The Political Life of Senator Florence Bohrer" is also part of this series. Series 2 (Boxes 2 and 3) contains mostly personal material. Papers relating to his military pension, birthday telegrams, and correspondence with the family on the death of Governor Fifer characterize this series. Some published materials, invitations, and speeches are also included. Series 3 (Boxes 3 and 4) includes letters and papers from her school days and letters from two European tours. Correspondence, written during Gertrude's illness and to her mother in sympathy upon her death, is also in this series. A guest register and funeral sermon is included. Series 4 (Boxes 4 and Oversize Folder) includes papers relating to Gertrude Lewis Fifer and George Fifer, wife and brother, respectively, of Governor Fifer; and Jacob and Joseph Bohrer, husband and son, respectively, of Senator Bohrer. Gertrude Lewis Fifer's papers include a photocopy and transcripts of correspondence with Brigham Young in 1867, before she married Governor Fifer. An oversize folder contains a certificate issued by the General Assembly after Gertrude Fifer's death. George Fifer's papers are from his military service and death while in the 33rd Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. Jacob Bohrer's papers include correspondence and papers relating to his death and funeral. Joseph Bohrer's papers include correspondence while a young man. Series 5 (Box 4) includes an assortment of unidentified correspondence, poetry, speeches, and published material. Two issues of nineteenth century newspapers, Harper's Weekly from May 25, 1861, and The Other Side (Bloomington, Illinois) from April 23, 1863, are also in this file.
