Abstract
Social worker in the McLean County office of the Illinois Emergency Relief Commission (1933-1938) and at the state level for the Illinois Public Aid Commission (1939-1942 and 1945-1974). Held several regional and state positions and after taking military leave returned to work for the Illinois Public Aid Commission and directed the first statewide administrative and case review. Later served as the chief to the Bureau of Resources and Child Support. He retired in 1974. He was born in 1909 to Charles and Carrie Knecht Zimmerman of Ohlman, Illinois. Graduated from Nokomis High School and Illinois Wesleyan University (1932). Member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, the American Public Human Services Association, Illinois State Historical Society and the Retired State Employees Association. Married Mary Catherine McDonnell in 1975 in Springfield. She died in 1999.
Correspondence, pamphlets, course notes, reports and clippings documenting Zimmerman’s education at Illinois Wesleyan University and his work in various social positions. Personal interests including Tau Kappa Epsilon activities, the Unitarian Church and Bloomington based organizations including Open Forum, and Playcrafters. Issues such as international relations and social welfare are also documented.
