Scope and Contents

The collection consists of news clippings and correspondence, as well as minutes and resolutions from labor unions and organizations to which Allard belonged, including the Progressive Mine Workers of America, the DuQuoin Miners Defense Committee, the Illinois Congress of Farmers and Workers, and the Unemployment Insurance Conference. The collection also includes issues of newspapers for which Allard served as editor and/or journalist, including The Fighting Miner, The Socialist Call, and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. A copy of the play Mill Shadows by Tom Tippett is also included, as well as news clippings pertaining to its staging by the Gillespie Women's Auxiliary of the Progressive Miners of America. Two oversize scrapbooks are also included in the collection.

Gerry Allard (1908-1965) was a coal miner, union activist, socialist, writer, and businessman. Born in France, his family emigrated to Illinois in 1912. His papers consist of newspaper clippings, correspondence, printed material, and scrapbooks. Some material is photocopies only. Topics include labor unionism, the Progressive Mine Workers of America, Socialist Party activities, and coal mining in Illinois. Copies of The Fighting Miner are also included.

Arrangement Note

Materials are arranged as follows: Biographical sketch and obituary of Allard; an issue of The Call newspaper, featuring an article by Allard; correspondence and news clippings; a memorial to labor activist Katie DeRorre; papers of the DuQuoin Miners Defense Committee; several issues of The Fighting Miner newspaper; minutes and resolutions of the Illinois Congress of Farmers and Workers; news clippings about the production of the play Mill Shadows, and a copy of the play itself; more news clippings, arranged chronologically; news clippings and letters from Allard's time as a journalist for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch; newspapers, including The Socialist Call; minutes and resolutions from the Unemployment Insurance Conference; the first annual report of the Women's Auxiliary of the Progressive Miners of America; and two oversize scrapbooks.
