Scope and Contents

Collection consists of two unpublished manuscripts by James Affleck (1813-1902): "The Stewart and Bennett Duel" about a Belleville, Illinois duel in 1819; and "Governor John Reynolds", a biographical sketch.

Biographical / Historical

James Affleck (1813-1902) was born in Scotland and immigrated with his parents to the United States at an early age, living first in North Carolina then Tennessee. The Afflecks moved to territorial Illinois and settled in St. Clair County. Beginning in 1820 Affleck lived in Belleville, IL, and trained as a cabinet maker. He also served as a city alderman and recorded local history.
