Collection contains the letters of William A. Allen (1830-1891) written to his wife, Millicent Blanchard Allen (1838-1922), during his service during the American Civil War in the 9th Illinois Infantry Regiment in Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. An assistant surgeon, Allen described camp life and medical care. Includes newsclippings, military papers and two musical scores.

Biographical / Historical
William A. Allen (1830-1891) was a physician in Greenville, IL when he enlisted as an assistant surgeon in the 9th Illinois Infantry Regiment in 1863. He served until 1864. Millicent Blanchard Allen (1838-1922) was born in Greenville and married William in 1860.
