Scope and Contents

Collection includes letters of Winthrop S. G. Allen (1837-1901) written during the American Civil War, 1862-1863. A private in the 12th Illinois Cavalry, Allen wrote from Camp Butler, Illinois; various camps in Maryland and Virginia; and an army hospital in Washington, D.C. Includes a description of the Union's 1862 capture of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.

Biographical / Historical

Winthrop S. G. Allen (1837-1901) was a wool carder living in Greenfield, IL, when he was mustered into service in 1861 during the American Civil War. He was a private in Company F, 12th Illinois Cavalry.
