Collection contains personal notes of Emma Ford Altgeld (1847-1915) about health, Christmas gifts, visits, etc., addressed from the Governor's Mansion to members of the Mathias Blumle family of Springfield, Illinois. Mathias Blumle was janitor and guard at the Illinois State House.

Biographical / Historical
Emma Ford Altgeld (1847-1915) was born in Ohio and educated at Oberlin College. She worked as a teacher and a novelist. She married John P. Altgeld in 1877 and after his election as Governor of Illinois the Altgelds moved into the Executive Mansion in Springfield, IL (1893-1897).
