Biographical / Historical

Chester A. Arthur (1829-1886) was born in Vermont and grew up and later practiced law in New York. During the American Civil War he served as quartermaster general of the New York state militia. He later served as Vice President of the United States and after the death of President James A. Garfield, Arthur was sworn in as the 21st President of the United States (1881-1885).
