Scope and Contents

The Don Alonzo Spaulding Papers, 1818-1871, concerning Spaulding's surveying activities in the mid-west, including correspondence, tax assessment books, surveys, and survey notebooks. The bulk of the collection is 1.7 cubic feet and incude surveys of Madison, Jackson, and Jersey counties as well as oversize survey maps of mid-west townships.

Alton, Illinois surveyor who surveyed Madison Country, Illinois and as a government surveyor worked in Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, and Florida. he was born in Castleton, Vermont and studied surveying while he worked on a farm and taught school. In 1818 he came to Illinois first landing in Massac where he was immediately given the job of surveying a tract of land for the new Johnson County seat. He moved to Edwardsville where he taugh school and did some surveying untl he was appointed suveor of Madison County in 1825. He held that position for ten years. Between 1834 and 1849 he surveyed lands in nortern Illinois around Chicgo, Wiconsin, Iowa and Missoui. From 1849-1854 he worked as th chief clerk in the surveyor general's office in St. Louis, with a brief appointmet, December 1853 - June 1854, as surveyor general. In 1854 he was appointed clerk in the general land office in Washington, D.C. After six months there he was sent to Florida and spent three years in th surveyor general's office at St. Augustin. In 1857 he returned to Alton, Illinois where he built a home in 1832 and where he spent the remainder of his life.
