Abstract Oliver Perry Hunt was a lawyer, farmer, teacher and soldier. Admitted to the bar in Indiana, he later moved to Tuscola, Illinois, where he taught school and practiced law. Then he married Eliza McDowell and began to farm. In 1862 he helped organize Company K of the 125th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was also active in local politics as a registered Democrat. Scope and Contents Collection consists of one document, Peter Force’s 1843 certificate of membership in the Illinois Literary and Historical Society. The printed certificate lists the society’s officers and includes the society constitution, bylaws, and a circular letter soliciting membership. The society’s corresponding secretary, Adiel Sherwood of Shurtleff College in Alton, IL, addressed the certificate to Force and included a postscript.
