Jacob H. Mechling diary

Abstract Born in 1893, John Cabot Blood was a landowner and lumber businessman from Grayville and Mt. Carmel, Illinois. The collection includes correspondence, cash receipts and disbursements, farm scale books, farm and lumber accounts, notes, tax records, and other financial records documenting Blood’s management of family farm lands in Illinois and Indiana and his involvement in the Blood Lumber Company.

Scope and Contents Two documents signed by Governor Palmer appointing notary publics. One in 1870 for Samuel Briley of Union County. One in 1871 for John Loomis of Jacksonville, Illinois. A 1869 invitation from the United Fellows and Kindred Societies of Freedmen asking him to address the Society on New Years day 1870 in Chicago. Signed by members of the Committee of Arrangements and numerous other members of the Society. Henry May was chairman of the Committee.

John Mathers speech

Scope and Contents Handwritten manuscript of speech given in Jacksonville, vehemently opposing the Nebraska Bill. Includes several news clippings regarding the bill and various states and cities opposition to it. One pamphlet from the committee appointed by the trustees of the Illinois Conference Female Seminary regarding payment from those who owe the the school money. Mather was the treasurer of the committee.
