Scope and Contents Collection contains the letters of William A. Allen (1830-1891) written to his wife, Millicent Blanchard Allen (1838-1922), during his service during the American Civil War in the 9th Illinois Infantry Regiment in Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. An assistant surgeon, Allen described camp life and medical care. Includes newsclippings, military papers and two musical scores.

Scope and Contents Collection includes letters of Winthrop S. G. Allen (1837-1901) written during the American Civil War, 1862-1863. A private in the 12th Illinois Cavalry, Allen wrote from Camp Butler, Illinois; various camps in Maryland and Virginia; and an army hospital in Washington, D.C. Includes a description of the Union's 1862 capture of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.
