Andrew H. Hershey was born on January 3, 1840 in Marietta, Pennsylvania to Dr. Andrew Hershey, a physician, and Fannie Nase. Dr. Hershey died in 1839 at the age of thirty-seven. Fannie remarried, this time to Mr. William Macken, and she, William, and Andrew moved to Savanna, Illinois. Hershey attended Mt. Anna Risse worked in the Illinois governor's office from the 1930s to the 1970s, serving as stenographer or secretary for governors Louis Emmerson, Henry Horner, Dwight Green, and Adlai Stevenson II. The collection contains letters and greeting cards written to and from Risse, many of them from Ambassador William Blair and Governor Stevenson. The collection also contains newspaper clippings and photographs.
