Farmer from Yellowhead Township, Kankakee County, IL who served in Company H, 76th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. He was born in Canada. He came to Illinois and in 1849 he and Sophronia Joyner were married. They had two sons, Azel and Frank. He joined the Infantry in 1862 and was made 3rd Sergeant, Company H, of the 76th Regiment in August of 1862. His regiment served in Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana.
