The first of these lodges was founded by John Upchurch in1868, who planned the secret rituals and devised the idea of a small payment by each member. Overview Andrew H. Hershey was born on January 3, 1840 in Marietta, Pennsylvania to Dr. Andrew Hershey, a physician, and Fannie Nase. Dr. Hershey died in 1839 at the age of thirty-seven. Fannie remarried, this time to Mr. William Macken, and she, William, and Andrew moved to Savanna, Illinois. Hershey attended Mt.
