He travelled by boat, the first trip on rivers and the second by ocean, most of the way and mentions the boats they pass, the cities where they stop, the countryside, farms and plantations, the effects of war on all of these, problems along the way, weather, what he eats, a shooting at one hotel, the return trip and the burial of his sons.
