Eight letters written to William Martin, a legislator from Madison County, Ill., discuss the campaign of 1844, the 1853 election and mentions Sloan, Scates, and Breese, political appointments and Martin's military claim for helping organize volunteers for the Mexican War. An 1849 letter responds that he will do all he can to help Mr. Davis after all he did to support Shields while in Mexico. An 1850 letter mentions "friend Davis", the slavery question and Clay's compromise.
