Abstract This collection documents the military, legal, and political career of John Alexander McClernand, who was a Brigadier General of volunteers during the Civil War.  McClernand served for two years (1861-1863) under the command of Ulysses S. Grant. He was promoted to Major General in 1862 but he was eventually relieved of his command.  Prior to his appointment as Brigadier General by President Lincoln, McClernand served in the Illinois Legislature and the United States House of Representatives....
