Scope and Contents The collection includes a letter, January 8, 1865, from Lt. Fenwick Y. Hedley, of the 32nd Illinois, thanking Sheffield for the kind treatment aboard the ship. A second letter January 9, 1865, signed by all officers of the 32nd who had traveled on the Winona, commending all of the Naval crew for their kindness, generosity and gentlemanly behavior. There is correspondence between Oakleaf and Sheffield, of Stonington, Conn., regarding the two documents and the incident discussed. Also...
