Scope and Contents Family correspondence written to Adeline Akerly (1834-1916), including 12 Civil War letters from her brother Ashley H. Alexander of the 12th Illinois Cavalry, Co. A. Ashley Alexander's letters describe life at Camp Butler, Springfield, Illinois and include brief descriptions of the engagement at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia; as well as the battles of Antietam and Fredericksburg.

A private in the 12th Illinois Cavalry, Allen wrote from Camp Butler, Illinois; various camps in Maryland and Virginia; and an army hospital in Washington, D.C. Includes a description of the Union's 1862 capture of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.
