Scope and Contents Consists of four handwritten arithmetic exercise books or cyphering books from various authors and locations, including: George W. Allen, dating to 1812-1814, brought to Greene County, Illinois, from Tennessee in 1818; Samuel Smith, dating to 1817-1820 (probably a fragment of a larger volume); and two books dating to 1819-1821 belonging to Richard Wells, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, and Edmund Palmer. The Wells book contains instruction in basic store accounting.

Scope and Contents Collection consists of one cypher book dating from January 1814 containing over 183 handwritten pages. While a student, Garland Wheeler recorded various math and business problem solving concepts, word problems, providing examples for each.
