Scope and Contents
Consists of four handwritten arithmetic exercise books or cyphering books from various authors and locations, including: George W. Allen, dating to 1812-1814, brought to Greene County, Illinois, from Tennessee in 1818; Samuel Smith, dating to 1817-1820 (probably a fragment of a larger volume); and two books dating to 1819-1821 belonging to Richard Wells, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, and Edmund Palmer. The Wells book contains instruction in basic store accounting.
