Scope and Contents Adam Badeau (1831-1895) was born in New York City and grew up in New Jersey. During the American Civil War he served on the staff of General Thomas W. Sherman and later Ulysses S. Grant. He achieved the rank of brevet brigadier general. After the war’s conclusion Badeau combined a long career as an author with work in various foreign service posts, including U.S. Consul in London.
