Scope and Contents Family correspondence written to Adeline Akerly (1834-1916), including 12 Civil War letters from her brother Ashley H. Alexander of the 12th Illinois Cavalry, Co. A. Ashley Alexander's letters describe life at Camp Butler, Springfield, Illinois and include brief descriptions of the engagement at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia; as well as the battles of Antietam and Fredericksburg.

Overview Founded in 1887 in Carthage, IL as the woman’s auxiliary to Alexander Sympson Post No. 455 of the Grand Army of the Republic in order to aid the Post in their efforts to aid and assist Civil War veterans and their families. Overview Alfred Henderson, a MacMurray College (Jacksonville, Illinois) professor and one time chairman of the history and government department, was born in England, the son of Alfred W. and Alice Dalby Henderson, but became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1917. He was raised in Rochester, New York and worked for Eastman Kodak after graduating from high school.
