Collection consists of a letter written by David W. Sharpe, a private in the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery Regiment, to his brother William Sharpe dated December 11, 1864, Fort Cummings, Broadway Landing on the Appomattox River, Virginia. It encloses a Confederate propaganda handbill signed by Samuel Cooper, Adjutant and Inspector General of the C.S.A., offering deserters from the U.S. Army food and safety. David received the handbill while exchanging papers with Confederate pickets.
